A tragic human story has emerged from Mumbai amid the ongoing Iran–Israel conflict, where a father continues to wait for his son’s body before accepting his death.

Thirty-two-year-old seafarer Dixit Solanki was reportedly killed when the oil tanker MKD Vyom, on which he worked as an engine-room oiler, was hit by an unmanned boat and caught fire in waters off Oman. The incident occurred on March 1 and is believed to be linked to the escalating hostilities in the region.

Back home in Kandivali West, Solanki’s father, 64-year-old Amratlal Solanki, has refused to perform mourning rituals or garland his son’s photograph because the body has not yet been recovered. “So far, I have not seen my son’s body. I have been given conflicting information,” he said, expressing frustration over the lack of clarity from the shipping company.

According to officials, the vessel was carrying about 58,000 metric tonnes of gasoline when the explosion occurred. While 21 crew members were rescued safely, Solanki, who was working in the engine room at the time, did not survive. The ship’s management company said attempts were made to retrieve his body but were unsuccessful.

The grieving father, himself a former seafarer, has written to maritime authorities and sailors’ unions seeking answers. He says all he wants is for his son’s body to be brought home so that the family can perform the last rites.
