India Set to Launch Free Nationwide HPV Vaccination for Adolescent Girls

New Delhi: The Government of India is set to roll out a free nationwide Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination programme for adolescent girls in a major step toward preventing cervical cancer.

Focus on Cervical Cancer Prevention

The HPV vaccine protects against high-risk strains of the virus responsible for the majority of cervical cancer cases. Health experts say early vaccination significantly reduces the risk of developing cervical cancer later in life.

Target Group and Implementation

The programme is expected to target adolescent girls, primarily in the 9–14 age group, through schools and public health centres. The vaccination drive will be integrated into existing immunisation and public health outreach systems.
